Georgia United Credit Union partners with UGA, Dalton State, IRS to offer free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

This year, Georgia United Credit Union will partner with the Internal Revenue Service, the University of Georgia and Dalton State College to provide the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program free to the Athens and Dalton communities.

The VITA program offers free tax filing assistance to individuals with low to moderate income. As part of the partnership, Georgia United will provide office space and funding to provide the local community an opportunity to have their taxes prepared and filed electronically at no charge. Students are trained by the IRS as tax preparers and will earn academic credit for their participation in the VITA program.

Dr. Lance Palmer, associate professor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, coordinates the University of Georgia course and Jamie Connors, associated professor of accounting, coordinates the Dalton State course. The VITA partnership has processed over $9 million in federal returns and $1.9 million in state returns since 2005.

Free sessions will be held at Georgia United’s Athens branch, located at 190 Gaines School Road, and at their Dalton branch, located at 605 Calhoun Street. Appointments can be reserved online or, for those without internet access, phone reservations can be made at 770-476-6400 ext. 1486.
