Georgia United Foundation partners to offer free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Georgia United Foundation will soon be offering tax help to low and moderate income taxpayers in the Athens and Dalton communities.

The Foundation puts together the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program thanks to a longstanding partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, Dalton State College, the University of Georgia and Georgia United Credit Union.

Students from Dalton State and UGA who are IRS-certified tax preparers earn academic credit by participating in the program to help prepare taxes for low and moderate income taxpayers, without depreciatable assets, business losses or extensive stock transactions. As part of the partnership, the students are offered office space by Georgia United Credit Union.

Appointments are available on the following days:

  • From Jan. 25 until April 11 in Athens by appointment only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and with limited walkin times on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will close March 7 until March 14 for spring break.
  • From Jan. 24 until March 7 in Dalton on Friday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment only.

Appointments can be reserved online at gucufoundation.org/vita and will be held at Georgia United Credit Union’s Athens branch, located at 190 Gaines School Road, and at its Dalton branch, located at 605 Calhoun Street.

“We look forward to offering the VITA program to our communities each year,” said Kim Wall, director of business and community development at Georgia United Credit Union. “VITA positively impacts the financial stability of our communities by providing tax preparation to residents in need and the students earn academic credit for their participation.”

Since the program’s inception in 2005, the VITA partnership has filed 20,248 tax returns totaling $18,131,999 in federal and state refunds for the Athens and Dalton communities.
