On March 13, The Osceola Council on Aging Meals on Wheels program hosted the live March for Meals St. Patrick’s 5K Run/Walk and raised over $25,000 to fill food pantries and assist with operating expenses.
Many do not realize the volunteers in the Meals on Wheels program serve more than food each day to seniors; they also give companionship to lift the spirits of seniors and help them feel connected to the community.
Ellie Hollander, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels America, pointed out an astonishing fact, “Our Meals on Wheels programs are serving an average of 77% more meals and 47% more seniors than they were on March 1 last year [due to the pandemic].”
Held at the Kissimmee Lakefront Park, participants were encouraged to wear quirky green attire to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The event included: a 5K run and walk; largest and most spirited team competition; a free Kid’s Run; and a silent auction. Those who brought non-perishable food to help build the food pantry were entered for a special prize drawing.
