On Saturday, March 27, kids showed up at school but not because they had to—they were a buzz with their family, friends and school mates to run the Smile Mile.
Although the event was converted to a virtual experience, that didn’t stop over 1,000 kids, 11 years and under, from signing up and taking care of tasks normally handled by adult volunteers.
An administrator praised how the middle school students stepped up to make the event safe and fun because volunteers were not allowed on campuses. Kids dotted hands after each lap, cheered, held signs, played instruments, dressed up as the school’s mascot and handed out medals.
Proceeds benefit the Track Shack Youth Foundation who has granted more than $2.5 million in donations to support hundreds of youth sports programs for 25 years in Central Florida. The Foundation’s mission is to promote lifelong fitness programs and established the Smile Mile Running Club to help schools implement youth running training programs.
