(Mobile, AL) The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) awarded New Horizons Credit Union in Mobile their First Place Dora Maxwell Award for exhibiting excellence in social responsibility. As a first-place winner in its division, New Horizons Credit Union will continue to the national level to compete against its fellow credit union peers across the country.
The Dora Maxwell Award recognizes credit unions that have shown outstanding social responsibility and service to the community – exhibiting the credit union industry philosophy of “People Helping People.” The award is named after Dora Maxwell who organized her first credit union in 1920 and secured charters for hundreds of credit unions throughout the United States.
New Horizons Credit Union earned the award for its community outreach and, in particular, for its involvement with the Mobile County Public School System’s scholastic Hi-Q matches. The Hi-Q program is the oldest continuing academic quiz competition in the US, and New Horizons has been the title sponsor for this competition since it expanded to Alabama in 1986. New Horizons CU partnered with the Mobile County Public School System because both share in the belief that Hi-Q is a very important part of quality education.
New Horizons CU strongly believes that the Hi-Q competition encourages academic achievement, initiative, and good sportsmanship. Furthermore, by sponsoring an academic quiz competition NHCU is giving high school students the opportunity to showcase and enrich their knowledge that will inevitably lead to higher college enrollment and a lower dropout rate for schools.
New Horizons Credit Union uses the Hi-Q platform to promote their financial literacy classroom presentations and scholarship program which awards five, $1,000 scholarships annually to deserving high school seniors. Awardees are chosen based on several factors, with one of the main focuses being community service. The Hi-Q program helps broadcast the scholarship directly to high schools.
In response to receiving the Dora Maxwell Award, New Horizons CU President/CEO, Edith Franklin, commented, “We are deeply honored to receive this award. It is a great feeling to know that our efforts in the community make a real difference in people’s lives. This is what makes New Horizons Credit Union and our Team stand apart from other financial institutions.”
